Theodora was born in Constantinople on 15 January 1096, the youngest daughter of Alexios I Komnenos, emperor of Byzantium, and Irene Doukaina. She had four brothers and four sisters. Among her siblings were Emperor Johannes II Komnenos Doukas, and historian Anna Komnena Doukaina.
About 1120 Theodora married Konstantinos Angelos, the son of Manolis Angelos, a military commander of Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, who would later in 1145 become the commander of the imperial fleet in Sicily. Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates names _Theodoram Alexii avi Manuelis filliam_ as the wife of _Constantium Angelum._ Together Konstantinos and Theodora had seven recorded children, altogether there were possibly eight children born to the couple. Of these, their sons Isaakios Angelos, Ioannes Doukas Angelos and Andronikos Doukas Angelos are recorded with progeny.
Theodora died on an unknown date. Among her numerous descendants was Eirene Angelina, wife of Philipp von Hohenstaufen, king of The Romans, son of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa; thus Theodora is an ancestress of every royal house in Europe. [2] |
