The family name is derived from a small village, Percy, near Villedieu in Normandy. In 1066 he accompanied William the Conqueror to England and the Battle of Hastings. He was high in favour with the Conqueror and became one of the feudal Lords of the conquest. He refounded the famous abbey of St. Hilda in Yorkshire and his brother, Serlo de Percy, became the first prior.
