History |
Raoul I, seigneur de Beaugency, was the son of Lancelin II, seigneur de Beaugency. About 1090 he married Mathilde/Mahaut de Vermandois, daughter of Hugues I Magnus, comte de Vermandois et de Valois, and Adelaide, comtesse de Vermandois et de Valois. Their children Lancelin III, Mahaut and Agnes would have progeny.
Raoul was an independent lord who dared to support the enemies of the French king. The construction of the château de Beaugency was started about 1090, but was not finished until 1130. The square keep stands at 117 feet high, although the two top floors were added in the 13th and 14th centuries. The original building was motted, that is to say, buried to a height of twenty feet and protected by a double perimeter wall. The only way into the lowest room was through the room above it, which could itself be reached only by a ladder. [1] |
