    Suffix 2nd Earl of Norfolk
    Born Abt 1150
    Gender Male
History Roger was born about 1150, the son of Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, and Juliane de Vere, daughter of Aubrey de Vere, Great Chamberlain of England and Alice de Clare. Roger succeeded to the earldom of Norfolk in 1189, and was confirmed in his earldom and other honours by Richard I, for his claim had been disputed by his step-mother Gundred de Beaumont in the reign of Henry II. King Richard also sent him to France as an ambassador in 1189.

Around Christmas 1181, Roger married Ida (possibly Ida de Tosny), a former mistress of King Henry II, and by her had eight children, of whom three would have progeny, including his eldest son and heir Hugh. Roger took part in the negotiations for the release of Richard from prison, and after the king\'s return to England became justiciar. The earl was one of the leaders of the baronial party which obtained John\'s assent to the Magna Carta, and his name appears among the signatories to this document.   [1
