History Robert was the son of Guillaume IV, comte d\'Auvergne, and his wife Umberga. He succeeded his father as count of Auvergne about 1016. He was named that year as a subscriber to the foundation of the church of St. Genès. However his piety did not prevent him from appropriating for himself the properties of the church of Aydat, which he was obliged to return in 1022.

With his wife Ermgard de Provence, given in some sources as a daughter of Guillaume II \'le Liberateur\', comte de Provence et Arles, and his second wife Adelaide dite Blanche d\'Anjou, he had a son Guillaume V and a daughter Ermengarde who would have progeny.   [1
