History |
Wilhelm was the son of Wilhelm II, Graf von Weimar, and succeeded him in Weimar on his death in 1003. From 1022 he was also count in the Eichsfeld, which brought him into conflict with the archbishops of Mainz. However, like his father he was on very good terms with King Heinrich II, later Emperor Heinrich II \'der Heilige\'. From time to time he oversaw the security of the castle of Meissen. In 1017 he came into armed conflict with Gebhard von Querfurt. Under Wilhelm the house of Weimar reached its greatest power within the Thüringen area.
Wilhelm did not have progeny with his first wife Berta. With his second wife Oda, daughter of Thietmar II, Markgraf von der Lausitz, he had four sons, Wilhelm IV, Otto, Poppo II and Aribo, of whom Otto and Poppo II would have progeny. Aribo was murdered in 1070.
Wilhelm died on 16 April 1039. His widow Oda married Dedi II, Markgraf der Ostmark, and had further children. [1] |
