Pons II Guillaume was the eldest son and successor of Guillaume III Taillefer and Emma de Provence. He thus inherited the title _marchio Provinciae._
Pons married his first wife Marjorie before 1037. They had a son Pons \'the Younger\' who did not have progeny and did not inherit his county. Marjorie died in 1044, and in 1045 Pons Guillaume married Almodis de La Marche, former wife of Hugues V de Lusignan. Their eldest sons Guillaume IV and Raimond V succeeded him in turn. Their son Hugues became abbot of Saint-Gilles. Their daughter Almodis married Pierre, comte de Melgueil.
Pons II Guillaume is known to have owned many freehold estates and to have relied on Roman, Salic and Gothic law. Already in 1030 he possessed considerable power in the Albigeois. In 1037 he gave many allodial churches and castles, including one half of the allod (freehold estate) of Porta Spina, in the Albigeois, Nimois, and Provence as a bridal gift to his first wife Marjorie.
In 1038 he split the purchase of the diocese of Albi with the Trencavel family. In 1040 he donated property in Diens to Cluny. In 1047, he first appears as count palatine in a charter donating Mossaic to Cluny.
It appears that Pons repudiated his second wife Almodis in 1053. He died in Toulouse probably late in 1060 or early in 1061, and was buried in Saint-Sernin. [1] |
